Brushwork 8/27

Still recovering from illness and injury. I’m on the mend but I just don’t bounce back the way I used to.

Two painted miniature figures stand on a textured base, one holding a sword and the other a skull, in front of a rocky hill with steps leading to a cave entrance, surrounded by small trees.
Two intricately painted miniature figurines of warriors in a fantasy setting, surrounded by stone ruins and greenery.
older Bones figs. cheap but bendy, rubbery.
Two miniature fantasy figures positioned in a natural setting, one warrior holding a sword and shield, and another archer preparing to shoot with a bow.
newer Bones figs. much crisper details.

The difference between the old and new Bones figs is striking; the first couple waves of white rubbery minis are plagued by soft details, bendy weapons, mold lines, and the occasional sloppy cast. For example, I received an older ‘Kord the Destroyer’ fig in a lot of pre-owned figs, and ended up Xacto-ing limbs, re-positioning arms and weapons to change the original ‘cheerleading’ pose into something with a bit more intentional menace.

A detailed miniature scene featuring painted figures around a rocky terrain with trees. The centerpiece is a larger figure on a hill holding weapons, surrounded by smaller figures positioned around a cave entrance, depicting a fantasy or tabletop gaming setting.
3D printed Barrow guarded by a Wight and his pet rats. “Get off my lawn! Damn adventurers.”

The newer Bones Black/Bones USA are more firm, clean, and crisp. They’re durable, take paint easily, and look good with little skill/effort. I’m scheduled to run an afternoon of pizza and gaming for a bunch of kids and am confident the new Bones figs will not only look cool but hold up to rough handling as well.

In other news, the Graveyard ‘encounter board’ has moved to the flocking phase.

It’s getting there. Shrubs, grass tufts, and a few more details, then it might be time for a handful of hapless adventurers to try their luck.

The Real World’s current unsettled political/social landscape sucks up an uncomfortable amount of bandwidth. Despite that, there has been incremental progress on another ‘Nightmares’ Incident as well as a set of rules for a sci-fi narrative wargame. Too early for specifics but I’ll post more info as those projects develop.

That’s all for now.

Stay safe. Stay sane. Good hunting.
