5E, Bolt Action, and Sci Fi

Getting gaming back on track after a patch of schedule conflicts, work obligations, and family events. Mike D has taken the helm as GM and resumed our DnD 5e campaign. (2014 “legacy” version, not the 2024 one)

DnD Session

In the reboot session, two of the old party joined three new PCs to guard a trade caravan. An overnight stop by a river led to an attack by a mob of fishmen. Unfriendly in a general sort of way, the amphibians nonetheless concentrated on the merchant and the caravan head guard. Our crew acquitted themselves well, with some very cool moments as Matt B’s Halfling Druid made good use of Thorn Whip, and John S’s Dwarf Cleric performed a Guiding Bolt headshot on another.

What was supposed to be an easy dinner ambush turned into a black day in fish town. Our heroes for the win.

Bolt Action 3e

John S has taken the lead on learning Warlord Game’s Bolt Action 3E to get us all into some WWII skirmishing. Here are some photos from our very first test game where US Rangers and German Grenadiers clashed over a small hilltop farm.

In the end, the US mortar team couldn’t quite stop the German squads’ aggressive tactics. The German Grenadier assault squad with STG44’s were particularly effective.

Rangers tried to force the German center and right, hoping the mortar would pin the Grenadiers down. Didn’t go as planned. The Grenadier rifle squad met the flank maneuver while the MG42 kept the center US squad in the stand of trees pinned down long enough for the German assault squad to scamper into position.

Shooting really kicked into high gear around turn three. Despite cover, both Ranger squads took pins and casualties.

With the US riflemen pinned down or injured in the trees, the MG42 team moved up and laid down fire on the Americans behind the wooden fence. More casualties and pins, the mortar crew packed up and went for reinforcements.

The hilltop farm remained in German hands. For now.

First time with the rules, I’m sure we made mistakes, but we enjoyed it and have scheduled another test game soon. The plan is for both of us to get a handle on the basics so we can run a full table game with all six of the CCWC regulars.

Farlight 43.2

Friday night will see the Sturgis crew embark on a new campaign. This time, they’re in a sci fi, post-apocalyptic setting (throw the Expanse, Eclipse Phase, and a dash of cyberpunk in a blender) and will be testing a new S7 rule set.

There’s a full cast of NPCs and Villains on the way, but here’s a sample.

Bat Rep for Session 1 coming next week.

That’s all for now. Thanks for stopping by.

Remember, you can pick up the latest S7 releases at Wargame Vault and Amazon if you’re looking for game or reading material.

Post-apocalyptic fantasy fiction, available in print, kindle, and audio.

A narrative campaign for the Zona Alfa/Kontraband tabletop game.

A compact wargame about small decisive missions during a cyberpunk corporate war.

It’s always great to see your latest painting work. Those are some great-looking minis – thanks!

    1. Thank you, Rodney.
Those WWII minis were painted 10+ years ago and while not historically accurate, they do the job.
Perhaps the new interest in Bolt Action will give me a reason to paint up the German Grenadiers that have languished under the table for so long.
We’ll see how serious the rest of the guys are.
      Have a good one.
