Creating faction squads for Zona Perestrelki, our latest iteration of home-brew skirmish rules for the STALKER-verse, I put together these five. Ex-military types, they have decent experience and gear. The figs themselves are Empress Miniatures Modern Russians with head swaps. Other faction squads on the painting table include Zone Enforcement troops, a (heavily armed) U.N. Research Team, and RMU/Elite Bandits (Rogue Military Unit turned Mercenary)
These lads will be seeing action tomorrow night. Not my best work but decent enough to die in the Zone, eh? Wish them luck.
UPDATE NOV. 15, 2016: The KS campaign was cancelled.
Personally, I think it might have hit the minimum funding goal, but apparently the creators didn’t feel the game was gaining the traction it needed to become everything they’d hoped for. Supposedly, they will try again in the near future. I hope so. Great premise, great figs.
Kickstarter Burn is a thing – I know. I’ve jumped into several I wish I hadn’t and relearned the old Caveat Emptor rule. Even though I’ve become far more discriminating in my choices these days, I keep an eye out for worthwhile projects. This one Peacekeepers got my attention. Very intriguing premise for a strategy wargame, plus great looking mechs, I decided to pledge.
It’s not yet funded, but as of this post there’s still plenty of time. I know I’m taking a chance with my money as well as passing on the info to you folks – I’d hate for this to disappoint in anyway – but from what I can tell, it seems like a solid bet. Watch the intro video at the KS page and decide for yourself. I think it’s a very engaging concept that could make a unique and challenging game. Plus look at those big stompy robots, will ya?
HeroForge custom miniatures is a very cool service offering a very cool product. Even an old metal snob like me has to admit 3D printing is the future of mini-wargaming, and with the detail, variety, and dynamic poses available, it’s hard to resist the urge to design a one-of-a-kind fig. So… I succumbed to temptation and had Maarten Che made up.
Maarten is the latest addition to the Itchy Bang Gang, my Shadowrun-esque cyberpunk crew. (see here for more on the IBG: Song of Mirrorshades and Shadows) He’s an ex-combat vet turned street soldier who brings solid experience and firepower to risky Sprawl runs.
My hobby funds for the rest of the year are slated for the upcoming Rogue Stars Nickstarter and some new shelves for the game room, so it’s not like I’m going to create a whole crew. At $29.00 a pop, Hero Forge ain’t cheap, but considering this is a custom character fig I got to design myself, I’d say it’s worth it for a special occasion.
Perhaps if I catch up on my current projects, then get some extra work or have a good month in book sales at Amazon, I’ll visit HeroForge again. After all, you have to admit both the process and the result are very keen.
Play-testing the next iteration of “Cleared to Engage”, Matt, Derek and I ventured into the Zone last night. A bio-tech firm contracted a team of private military to escort a researcher to several sites in the village of Timanza, five klicks inside the Cordon. A crew of Bandits heard the news through the grapevine and figured there must be something worth having there, and so set off to stop them and get it for themselves. (whatever it is, it must be worth big bucks. Otherwise, why pay mercs to babysit an egghead?)
In the new version of CTE, weapon lethality is offset by lower weapon damage and more frequent Will checks in Combat. We’re undecided on the adjustments, still testing and tweaking, but it made for a quick, fun game. The Bandits took some hits early on, but rallied to drive the Merc Team back with their tail between their legs, dragging their dead and wounded with them.
There are more Zone excursions scheduled and some of the new modern Russians from Empress on the way, so expect to hear and see more Zone Firefights in the near future.
